▶▶▶ Haerin was never really a girly girl, and her parents never tried to force her to be. She preferred action figures over barbies, except for Sailor Moon. She grew to love comic books at a very young age thanks to her father, Jinho. He spoiled her and would let her dress up as a super hero every Halloween. It honestly always felt like nothing could go wrong in her life. That is until her father was in a car accident. It all felt like a dream, a really bad dream that she couldn't wake from. Though the doctors tried their best, he slipped into a coma. She tried to have hope that he would one day open his eyes. At the age of eight-years-old, here she was trying to be strong for her mother, who she would hear cry at night. After two months of being in a coma, the doctor told her mother that he was brain dead. No matter how much she denied it, she knew that it was time to let him go. Haerin gave her father a kiss on the cheek and held onto his arm before he slipped away. Things were hard, but she always tried her best to find ways to make her mother smile. Even if it was a small action like sharing a cookie. It was just the two of them at home now. Her mother, Miyoung, tried to be stronger for Haerin. Haerin reminded her so much of Jinho and she treasured her even more. That's what gave her mother strength.

▶▶▶ One day on that same year of the tragedy, she became very sick during the winter time and ended up with a terrible ear infection. Once the pain got worst and the medicine the doctor recommended was not working, Haerin's mother finally decided it was time to take it further. She took Haerin to the hospital and that's when they realized just how bad it had gotten. After spending days at the hospital, she could no longer hear. They took many tests, but there was nothing they could do to bring her hearing back. This was one of the hardest moments of her life. The comic books are what got her to pull through this new change. With the sign language classes she took, she was now able to communicate easier. If not, she would take a little notepad with her everywhere to write on. It touched her deeply that her mother took the sign language lessons as well. Just so this process would go easier at home at least. It took time, but she got used to the silent world. Once Haerin was fourteen-years-old, her mother felt it would bring Haerin more joy in life if they lived in South Korea with her family. Though, Haerin absolutely loved her home in Canada, she was happy to be around more family members. Once they had gotten to South Korea, the family members surprised her with sign language. It turned out they also learned as well to communicate better with her. She was so filled with happiness and felt things were starting to look up again.

▶▶▶ At the age of sixteen-years-old, her mother surprised her with hearing aids. Though, it was not for sure that she would be qualified for them. The doctor tested one on her and luckily it worked, she was able to hear again. That moment brought tears to her mother's face, tears of joy. Haerin was so thankful to her mother and family members, who pitched in to buy the hearing aids. There were times that she didn't use them. Sometimes she just wanted the world to go silent again. Then there were times that she would get upset and leave her hearing aids off on purpose.

▶▶▶ Once she was done with school, she wanted to go to college to become a veterinarian. With the money she saved from her job, Haerin focused on making her dream come true. At least what she thought was her true dream. She wanted to make all those she cared about proud of her. But most of all, she wanted to make her father proud. Pushing through and doing the best she can, she passed all of her classes at Seoul National University with highscores. After going for two years, she realized that her true dream was to be a tattoo artist. Though with all of the knowledge she now had, she planned help animal shelters the best she could as a volunteer. No matter what she did, she knew that she would make an impact on the world, even if just a small portion.
